All about this bourbon apples foster

Apples foster is like the seasonal cousin of bananas foster. Instead of using rum and walnuts like in a traditional bananas foster, I used bourbon and pecans to create a warm Fall dessert. This dessert isn’t complete unless you top it with vanilla ice cream. For a nutrient-dense and homemade option, I highly recommend trying my vanilla ice cream recipe. You won’t want to go back to store-bought after trying this.

If you’re looking for a way to use up those Fall apples with a dessert that comes together in just 15 minutes – both flourless and gluten free – you’ll love this bourbon apples foster.

Kitchen essentials
  • An apple peeler
  • A knife and cutting board
  • A medium-sized skillet or saucepan

  • Chopped pecans: I’ve also used chopped walnuts and had great results
  • Butter: can be substituted for coconut oil
  • Bourbon: can be substituted for dark rum.

  • Vanilla bean powder: can be substituted for equal parts vanilla extract.

Ingredients

  • 2 small/medium apples

  • 2 tbsp chopped pecans

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • 2 tbsp bourbon

  • 1/4 cup cane sugar

  • 1 tsp vanilla bean powder

  • 1/4 tsp cinnamon

  • A sprinkle of salt

  • Vanilla ice cream for serving

Directions

  • Prepare the apples. Peel and dice them into 1/2 inch pieces. Set them aside.
  • In a deep skillet on medium heat, melt the butter. If the butter browns instantly, the pan is too hot. Stir in the bourbon, cane sugar, vanilla, and cinnamon. Bring to a low boil.
  • Once boiling, add the diced apples and chopped pecans. Stir for 2-3 minutes and serve over vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!
