This recipe will either have you reminiscing on your childhood or gagging at the thought of it – which one are you!? Well I’m hoping if you have found yourself here then you’re willing to give it a shot! It’s the perfect sweet and salty treat.

I swear my favorite part of adulthood has been recreating some of my childhood favorites into healthy and nutritious meals. It may not look it, but this copycat Wendy’s frosty and fries is actually healthy. The crispy potato wedges are baked and oil-free, providing a nutritious source of carbs. And the chocolate frosty is made with frozen bananas! Not only are you satisfying those sweet and salty cravings, but you’re also getting in a couple servings of fruit! I honestly can’t believe I ate a frosty + fries for lunch today. My childhood self would be so proud!

How to freeze bananas for the chocolate frosty:

  • Use ripe bananas. It’s important to use very ripe bananas, as they are much sweeter. Brown and spotty is perfect!
  • Peel and cut bananas. By freezing the bananas properly, the blending process will be much easier later. To freeze, peel your ripe bananas and cut into 5-6 pieces. Place in an air-tight bag or container and freeze overnight. If they are still soft when you’re ready to use, they are not frozen enough.

Kitchen essentials:

  • A baking sheet
  • A silicone baking mat (optional, but highly recommended for the crispiest potato wedges)
  • A high speed blender or food processor. I find my food processor is better at achieving a thicker frosty but a blender will work as well.
  • A rubber spatula (optional)

Substitutions:

  • Yukon gold potatoes: I prefer Yukon gold potatoes for these wedges, but any type of potato will work.

Ingredients

  • For the Crispy Potato Wedges
  • 2 Yukon gold potatoes

  • Sea salt

  • For the Chocolate Frosty
  • 2 medium frozen bananas (see tips above for how to properly freeze bananas)

  • 1 tbsp cacao powder

  • 1/4 cup non-dairy milk (I used soy milk)

Directions

  • For the crispy potato wedges:
  • Preheat oven to 425 F.
  • Wash potatoes. Since we will be leaving the skin on, it’s important to wash off any dirt on the potatoes.
  • Cut potatoes into 1/4-1/2 inch wedges. Thinner wedges makes for extra crispiness!
  • Bake! Lay potatoes out in a single layer on a baking sheet with a silicone mat, making sure they do not touch. Sprinkle sea salt over the tops of potatoes. Bake until golden brown and crispy, about 30-35 minutes.
  • For the chocolate frosty:
  • Blend in the food processor or blender. To your food processor, add the frozen bananas, cacao powder and nondairy milk and blend. It may take a few minutes to fully blend. Use a rubber spatula to scrape the sides of the food processor if necessary. If your food processor/blender is having a hard time blending, add a splash more milk. Dip the potato wedges in the frosty and enjoy!

Notes

  • The nutrition label is based on 1 serving and 1/4 tsp of salt on the potato wedges. However, nutrition will vary slightly depending on the type and size of potatoes used.
  • Potato wedges are crispiest on day 1, but can be stored in the fridge for up to a week in an air-tight container.
