– vegan – refined sugar free – gluten free – low fat –
I love coming up with new and unique smoothie flavors, especially when they taste like dessert. This samoa smoothie is healthy, vegan and refined sugar free. It includes all the delicious flavors of a samoa cookie – the coconut milk mimics those yummy coconut shreds. The cacao powder gives it that creamy, chocolate-y taste, and the medjool dates gives those incredible pops of caramel flavor. You gotta try this flavor combo!
How to freeze bananas for the creamiest smoothie:
Freezing the bananas beforehand isn’t required, but it does make for a creamier smoothie. If you choose to use fresh bananas, I recommend omitting about half the milk from the original recipe and adding 1 cup of ice.
- Use ripe bananas. It’s important to use very ripe bananas, as they are much sweeter. Brown and spotty is perfect!
- Peel and cut bananas. By freezing the bananas properly, the blending process will be much easier later. To freeze, peel your ripe bananas and cut into 5-6 pieces. Place in an air-tight bag or container and freeze overnight. If they are still soft when you’re ready to use, they are not frozen enough.
Kitchen essentials:
- A blender or food processor. I have been using a Ninja blender for years and I still love it.
Substitutions:
- Coconut milk: I recommend using a carton of coconut milk instead of canned versions which are thicker and higher in fat content. However, both types of coconut milk will make a great samoa smoothie.
- Cacao powder: can also be substituted for carob powder.
